Windows 11

Find duplicate files

Two matching names do not prove that one file is safe to delete.

TRY THIS FIRST

Compare files before removing anything

In File Explorer, inspect copies in a folder you understand. Compare their locations, sizes and contents.

Start with this check

Result: Use what you find to choose the next step.

Still not working?

Use a content comparison for suspected duplicates. Keep a backup and choose which location should retain the file before moving a redundant copy to the Recycle Bin.

Check the result: Repeat the original task after making one relevant change. If the problem returns, keep the exact message and time.

Choose the entry that matches where the error appeared. A code alone does not identify every cause. Commands are copied for you to review; this page does not run them.
