Performance diagnosis

How should I interpret GPU usage in a game?

GPU usage estimates how busy the graphics processor is during a measured interval; it is not a complete performance diagnosis.

QUICK EXPLANATION

Read GPU usage alongside frame time and the scene

High use can be normal when a game is rendering as fast as it can. Low use can happen because of a CPU limit, frame cap, menu, loading, power state or measurement behavior.

Neither a high nor a low percentage alone proves that a component is faulty.

Result: A consistent reading during active gameplay is more useful than a single sample in a menu.

How to check it

Check the game's FPS cap, workload and frame-time graph. Compare a repeatable scene and consult the GPU vendor's monitoring guidance for the chosen tool.

Check: Confirm whether changing one graphics setting predictably changes GPU use and frame time.
