What is frame time?

Frame time is the time taken to produce a frame, usually measured in milliseconds (ms).

QUICK EXPLANATION

Use frame time to spot uneven delivery

At a steady rate, frame time is approximately 1,000 divided by FPS: 60 FPS is about 16.7 ms per frame and 120 FPS about 8.3 ms.

A stable frame-time trace often feels smoother than the same average FPS with large spikes.

Result: A frame-time graph stays relatively even when frames arrive at a consistent pace.

How to check it

If a game feels stuttery, inspect its frame-time graph in a trusted overlay and note spikes. Compare the same location and avoid relying on one short sample.

Check: Repeat the same route or scene and check whether the spikes reproduce.
