Windows Cannot Find Wi-Fi Adapter After Reinstall
A fresh Windows installation may not include the driver required for your wireless adapter.
When that happens, the Wi-Fi option may disappear entirely.
Check Device Manager
Open Device Manager.
Look under:
- Network adapters
- Other devices
- Unknown devices
A missing driver may appear as Network Controller with a yellow warning icon.
Find the Hardware ID
Right-click the unknown device and choose:
Properties → Details → Hardware Ids
You may see something like:
PCI\VEN_XXXX&DEV_XXXX
Search that exact ID using another device if necessary.
Download the Driver Elsewhere
Use:
- another computer
- your phone
- the PC manufacturer's support page
Download the correct Windows 11 Wi-Fi driver.
Transfer it using:
- USB flash drive
- external storage
- phone file transfer
Install Chipset Drivers Too
On some systems, installing chipset drivers first can help Windows correctly identify integrated devices.
Avoid Generic Driver Websites
Random driver-download sites may distribute outdated or modified installers.
Prefer the computer, motherboard, or wireless-chip manufacturer's official support pages.
Example: Wi-Fi disappeared after a clean install
This is an illustrative troubleshooting example, not a report from a tested PC. Suppose Wi-Fi worked before reinstalling Windows, but now Settings has no Wi-Fi option and Device Manager shows Other devices → Network Controller.
- Open that device's Properties → Details → Hardware Ids. Copy the full first entry, including any
SUBSYSportion. Do not use the placeholder values shown earlier as a real driver search. - On another device, open the support page for your exact laptop model or motherboard revision. Match its Windows version and wireless hardware; one product family can ship with several different adapters.
- Transfer the manufacturer's package by USB. Follow its installation instructions; if supplied as a ZIP, extract it before running the included installer.
- Restart if requested, then check whether the named adapter appears under Network adapters without a warning and whether Wi-Fi is available in Settings.
If the installer says no compatible hardware was found, stop and recheck the model and hardware ID. Installing every wireless package is not a useful diagnosis.
The driver installed: what next?
| What you see | Next check |
|---|---|
| The adapter has a warning icon | Read the exact Device status message and error code on its General tab. Keep those details with the driver version for manufacturer support. |
| The adapter appears, but there are no networks | Check airplane mode, Wi-Fi settings and any physical wireless switch. Move near a known-working access point. |
| Wi-Fi connects, but websites fail | Continue with connected-but-no-internet checks; repeatedly reinstalling the driver may not address DNS or router problems. |
| No adapter or unknown controller appears | Check the manufacturer's hardware-detection guidance. A missing driver is only one possibility; firmware settings or a hardware fault may also need investigation. |
