Windows 11 Taskbar Not Working

By Iikka Isosaari · Windows 11 · Updated

A frozen taskbar often indicates a problem with Windows Explorer or Windows Shell components.

Before repair commands: save your work, keep a backup of important files, and use Terminal or Command Prompt as Administrator. These commands change Windows files; they are not read-only diagnostics. /Online targets the Windows installation currently running, not an offline installation in recovery.

Restart Explorer

Press:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Find Windows Explorer and choose Restart.

This is often the fastest fix.

Restart Windows

If Explorer immediately freezes again, restart the whole PC.

Check System Files

In an administrator terminal, run DISM and wait for successful completion, then run SFC:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Read each result before proceeding. If DISM fails, record its error and investigate the repair source.

Remove Recent Shell Customization Tools

If you use third-party software that modifies:

temporarily disable or uninstall it.

Major Windows updates can break compatibility with Shell modification utilities.

If Start Is Unavailable

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Use Run new task, enter cmd, and select the administrator-privileges option when opening a terminal for repair commands. Save work before restarting Explorer or Windows; Explorer restarts can interrupt file operations.
