Windows Update Stuck? Try These Fixes
Windows Update can occasionally become stuck downloading, preparing, or installing an update.
Before considering a Windows reset, try a few less disruptive fixes.
Before repair commands: save your work, keep a backup of important files, and use Terminal or Command Prompt as Administrator. These commands change Windows files; they are not read-only diagnostics. /Online targets the Windows installation currently running, not an offline installation in recovery.
Restart the PC
If Windows is still usable, save your work and use its normal Restart option. If an update is being applied on the restart screen, allow it to finish rather than forcing the power off.
Windows may already have pending servicing operations that need a restart before updates can continue.
Check Free Disk Space
Major Windows updates require temporary storage.
Open:
Settings → System → Storage
Make sure the system drive has reasonable free space.
Repair Windows Components
Open Terminal as Administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then:
sfc /scannow
Windows servicing issues can sometimes be caused by damaged components.
Run Windows Update Again
Open:
Settings → Windows Update
Click Check for updates.
Check the Error Code
If Windows Update displays an error such as:
0x8007....
write it down.
Specific error codes often provide far better troubleshooting clues than simply knowing that the update failed.
Avoid Forcing Shutdowns During Updates
Interrupting Windows while it is actively applying updates can create additional problems.
If progress appears frozen, give Windows reasonable time before assuming the update has failed.
Run the Update Troubleshooter
Open Get Help and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. Record the failed update identifier and error code before trying further repairs.

Questions about Windows Update Stuck? Try These Fixes
What should I note before resetting Windows Update components?
Record the update name, exact error code, current progress and available disk space. Some update stages take time, so avoid interrupting an installation without evidence it has stopped.
When are DISM and SFC useful for update failures?
They can help if system-file or component-store corruption is suspected. Their results should guide next steps; not every update failure is a corruption problem.
